What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic Therapy is a treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid) which is activated with laser light. This treatment can minimize pores and reduce oil glands while the laser light destroys acne causing bacteria, effectively treating stubborn acne, acne rosacea and improving the appearance of some acne scars.

How many treatments will it take?

To achieve maximum improvement a series of 3-4 treatments spaced 3 to 5 weeks apart is the most effective.

What are the disadvantages?

Following treatment, the treated area may appear red with some peeling for 2-7 days. Temporary swelling of the lip and around the eyes can occur for a few days as well.

Are there precautions?

Yes! Absolute sun avoidance is required for 24 hours following treatment. Even a small amount of sun light exposure can result in a very serious burn. The day of treatment, plan to wear a hat, apply sunscreen and avoid all forms of light exposure.
